Aims

Modern Theatre Dance defies a single permanent definition. This is largely due to its ability to adapt, develop and evolve with the changing fashion in dance. Through a carefully planned and well tried examination syllabus, which combines modern dance, jazz dance, and other dance styles, young people are trained to become disciplined and versatile dancers who have a professional attitude towards dance.

Examinations

A series of examinations has been created from children’s grades through to professional teaching qualifications. The children’s work is based on natural movements: walking, running, jumping and skipping. It is designed to encourage an imaginative and rapid response from beginners. Boys work has been developed to meet the increasing demand for a modern dance training for boys. Exams can be taken in ISTD Modern at Chiswick Theatre Arts from the age of five.

Miss Georgina was fortunate enough to have been trained by Miss Doreen Bird in Modern Dance. Miss Doreen Bird was one of the pioneers of the Modern Dance syllabus and was an influential figure in the creation of the new Modern Dance Syllabus. Miss Georgina was fortunate to be one of Miss Bird’s students on whom Miss Bird worked with to create some of the new syllabus. Miss Georgina would travel the country with Miss Bird to demonstrate the new syllabus – including the prestigious ISTD Congress.

The new choreographic awards ‘CREATION’ have been established in Miss Bird’s memory.

Miss Georgina believes that ISTD Modern Dance is essential for all young dancers who are serious about their dancing and who love to dance.

ABOUT LAMDA MUSICAL THEATRE EXAMS
LAMDA examinations in Musical Theatre are designed to develop the skills necessary to communicate the dramatic content of musical theatre text over a range of musical styles/categories. The emphasis is on performance and presentation rather than on the study of musical theatre as a whole.
These examinations also provide candidates with the opportunity to develop skills which support the delivery of dramatic text and devised performance.

Film School 10-14 yrs

Our practical hands-on course is designed for the budding young filmmaker. It introduces youngsters to the basics of making a film – coming up with an idea, turning it into a story, storyboarding a scene, camera work, sound, lighting, directing and editing.

Students will work within the group and in smaller crews to devise, plan and execute their film. Every individual will spend some time in each of the crew roles.

On completion of the course, each student will be presented with a DVD of the finished film to share with their family and friends.

It is helpful for students to bring their own camcorders but not essential as most filming will be done using our professional equipment (Sony PD170).

For students to work on their own final edit, they will need to bring with them a laptop with video-editing software installed eg. Windows Movie Maker (pre-installed with Windows XP and Vista)

LAMDA EXAMINATIONS IN SPEECH AND DRAMA
The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) is one of the oldest drama schools in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1861, it quickly established itself as a centre of excellence in performing training. LAMDA has provided theatre and the world of film and television with generation upon generation of first-class actors and expertly trained stage managers across the world.

LAMDA began offering speech examinations to the public in the 1880’s. Since then, these examinations have been refined into a comprehensive system of performance evaluation by experts in education, acting and communication. In addition to being the UK’s largest statutory speech and drama awarding body, LAMDA Examinations has a reputation for excellence across the globe.

LAMDAs mission is to:

  • Improve standards in communication through the spoken word

LAMDA examinations are designed to equip learners, whatever their age or aspirations, with a range of skills which will serve them throughout life.
Preparation for a exam can:

  • Unlock imagination and creative-thinking

  • Refine technical skills and artistry
  • Promote team-work

The examinations themselves provide learners with an opportunity to:

  • Measure progress against an international standard
  • Make contact with expert practitioner assessors outside the immediate teaching environment
  • Build self-confidence and self esteem
  • Receive critical appraisal and guidance for future development

The  LAMDA exams we offer at Chiswick Theatre Arts in Speech and Drama and Musical Theatre allows the learner to extend personal and vocational skills as well as to realise their potential.
